Well, okay. The Labor Party policy is now in favour of gay marriage. But no one in the party will be forced to vote for it, like they are with other policies.

Instead, they are going to be able to vote in line with their conscience. For some, this will be an easy decision to make, voting for the right decision (yes). Others are going to vote against it because of personal beliefs, or more cynically, because they’re scared they’ll lose votes if they support it.

The bill won’t be presented to parliament until next year, and to be horribly pessimistic, it’s going to take an awful lot to get it passed through both houses of parliament, with the Liberals position still being against the idea. So we’ll know what there is to know when parliament resumes.
